Best places to stay in Kirtipur

Are you looking for a hotel or a place to stay in Kirtipur?

Well, you have come to the right place!

Kirtipur is a great little town just outside of Kathmandu and known for its amazing temples and Newari culture. If you want to learn more about what to do in Kirtipur you can read my article here.

Although it is not super touristy in terms of accommodation – more about this later, there are a few hotels or guesthouses where you can stay.

In this article I will provide you with an overview of the best places to stay in Kirtipur and even provide you with my absolute favourite one first. Spoiler alert: I took a cooking class there and the views are AMAZING and the owners are incredibly kind. Highly recommend.

Important consideration when booking a resort in Nepal:

Before you book a hotel in Nepal, it is important to understand the Nepali meaning of ”Resort”. Nepali lingo can be a bit weird. When you see mutton on a menu for instance, it is 100% goat, not sheep. It’s honestly something I still struggle with after 4 years of living in Nepal.

Anyway, kind of the same thing has happened with the term resort. When we think about a resort we think about lots of amenities, a beautiful large pool, three different dining options, a large buffet breakfast and of course a great spa. Now, apart from offering some well-needed R&R, these Nepali resorts have almost no amenities. They are just places where Nepalis go to have a drink and escape the city. I honestly don’t really know what the difference is between a normal hotel and a resort in Nepal but I think it might have something to do with Resorts being a bit more rural than hotels and offering outdoor seating and alcohol.

Anyway what I am trying to say in a very long-winded way is that you can’t expect too much from a hotel just because it calls itself Resort. Have a good look at the amenities provided on the booking page and the pictures before you start dreaming of pools and massages.

Green Eco Resort

📍 Address: Pushpalal Marg, Kirtipur 44600 | ⭐ Rating: 9.0/10 | 💰 Price From: $15

This place is really highly recommended!
We spent six days with Shekhar, Kalpana and their children and they immediately made us feel like part of the family.
The room was very clean – even more if you consider that you are in Nepal and the whole house was really new. As it gets cold in winter, there was a thick cozy blanket on the bad and a small plug-in-heater.
Shekhar and Kalpana really made our stay so so special!

If you want to stay in Kirtipur, I recommend you stay at Green Eco Resort. I took a cooking class with Kalpana (You can check out the class here) which was held in the family home of the people that run the hotel, right next door.

Kalpana and her husband Shekhar are incredibly kind and welcoming and they really made me and my husband feel at hime. They gave me a tour of the Resort and I have to say – it’s pretty amazing. It’s only a small hotel with not that many rooms. The rooms are large and come with their own bathroom. Some of the rooms have a balcony from where you have absolutely gorgeous views over fields and – on a good day, Swoyambu!

Now, what’s really great is that Shekhar actually has a background as a trekking guide. It means that he can arrange quite a range of activities for you if needed. He can also guide you on treks around the valley or, if he’s not available, find you someone amazing who can.

What is important to note, especially for people with kids like me, is that kids under 9 are not allowed for some reason. As for restaurants: if you are hungry Kalpana can cook up a feast for you.

Would I recommend staying here? If you are looking to stay somewhere very quiet in the fields of Kirtipur, this is the place to be! If you want some action or stay in the centre of the city, read on. This place is clean and the owners are super kind so you can’t really go wrong.

Kirtipur Hillside Hotel & Resort

📍 Address: Chithu Rd 10, Kirtipur 44600 | ⭐ Rating: 9.2/10 | 💰 Price From: $28

I visit Nepal every year, each time I stay at Hillside Hotel. This hotel has been upgraded since my first visit here some 8 years ago. I like many things here including the warm atmosphere of the owner Vijaya Maharjan, his brother Ajaya Maharjan and their family. The view may be superb from the terrace where is the dining room. The food is very good (I am fond of their mango lassi!). There are very nice walks to make nearby, and there is no pollution like in Kathmandu.

Another hotel I can recommend in Kirtipur is the Kirtipur Hillside Hotel and Resort. This is a nice and comfortable retreat near Kirtipur. If you want to stay in the centre of the town, this is the place I would recommend booking.

The hotel is located on Chithu Road which is not too far from Chilancho and the Umma Maheshwor temple as well as many of the amazing restaurants mentioned in my article on the best places to eat in Kirtipur.

From this little hotel you will have amazing panoramic views over the Kathmandu valley and even the Himalayas. As so many hotels of this calibre, you won’t have access to an elevator when staying here and the rooms are a bit old-fashioned, but I do think that this adds to the charm of visiting Nepal.

Guests really seem to like the food here. I can’t say I have eaten here but I have heard amazing things about the family that owns this place.

If you are looking to stay near the centre of Kirtipur and want to be able to walk out to some restaurants and temples, then this is definitely the hotel for you!

My two cents about staying in Kirtipur

I know I have just written about the best places to stay in Kirtipur but… if you ask me, I would just stay in Kathmandu or Patan. It is pretty easy to get to Kirtipur from Kathmandu or Patan. Sure, if you want to go to Bhaktapur I would 100% recommend you book a hotel there to experience the city to its fullest, but Kirtipur is so close to the city and there is all in all very little to do that I would just head over for a morning or an afternoon.

How to get to Kirtipur? Well you can just take a taxi or even get a bus. You can read all about getting to Kirtipur in my blog post on the best ways to get to Kirtipur which you can read here.
